Description: Students will learn proper pronunciation of the Spanish letters; the conjugation of regular -ar, -er, and -ir verbs in present tense; the forms of such commonly used irregular verbs as ser, ir, tener, etc.; some basic grammar; and much vocabulary. Conversational skills will be stressed. Students will also study the culture of Hispanic countries and discover career and leisure options that are enhanced by knowledge of Spanish.

Description: Students will practice all four language skills- listening, speaking, reading, and writing- with increasing difficulty. They will learn the present tense conjugations of stem-changing and reflexive verbs, the preterite forms of regular and irregular verbs, and the affirmative and negative informal command forms. Grammar and much vocabulary will be part of the course content. Students will be expected to express themselves more spontaneously and creatively in oral and written form. Cultural study will continue to be an integral part of instruction.

Description: The listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities will continue to increase in length and difficulty. Students will learn to express themselves in the following verb tenses: imperfect past, future, conditional, present perfect, and future perfect. They will study the affirmative and negative informal, formal, and first person plural command forms and will be introduced to the subjunctive mood. Students will explore Hispanic culture in more detail and will learn about the history of and the important individuals in Hispanic countries in more depth.

Description: Students will review previously learned verb tenses and will learn the forms and uses of verbs in the subjunctive mood. They will continue to increase their vocabularies and to use grammatical structures with more accuracy. They will read and understand longer passages, including short stories and poetry. Students will narrate and describe in all verb tenses in oral and written form with greater proficiency. They will be able not only to tend to their welfare in the target culture but also to explore options in a situation and to handle difficulties and unexpected events. They will also conduct research on important historical events, individuals, and cultural aspects.
