Work Study

Who can take it? Seniors and Juniors with special permission ONLY.What is it?Working on a job relating to the career you wish to pursue for 1 to 3 hours during the school day and receiving school credit for the hours worked. This IS NOT an opportunity to work just to make money-- that is what after-school jobs are for.

What are the requirements?

1. Cumulative grade point average of C or above.Excellent school attendance.No discipline write-ups by teachers the previous year.You arrange for your own job.You stay in the program for the entire year. YOU CANNOT DROP A CLASS AT THE END OF THE FIRST SEMESTER AND DO WORK STUDY.Approval from Mrs. Gavenda and work study coordinator.Completing and handing in ON TIME a weekly journal of at least 200 words. LACK OF A JOURNAL EACH WEEK COULD RESULT IN REMOVAL FROM THE PROGRAM AND NO CREDIT FOR THE TIME WORKED.Completing a semester project agreed upon by student and STW Coordinator.Completion of an employer evaluation each nine weeks.

2. Completion of a take-home exam second semester.

WORK STUDY IS A SCHOOL COURSE AND THE SAME REQUIREMENTS APPLY. IF PAPERWORK IS NOT TURNED IN ON TIME AND IF ATTENDANCE IS POOR, YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THE COURSE.

Service Learning

This course is intended for the high school student who is interested in pursuing a career working with special education students. Interested students will be required to write an explanation of why they want to be included in this unique class. An additional requirement will be to gain instructor permission through a successful interview process.

Students will be expected to tutor and provide direct instruction to special education students as requested by the instructor. Students should be enthusiastic, good role models and patient working with challenging students of all needs. Successful students will be provided with a letter of recommendation to be included in the personal files.
